You can't really get Mad Cow Disease but instead is another kind of disease that is called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease or vCJD for short. The Mad cow Disease was serious because when there was an outbreak in the UK in 1986 it caused 144 deaths. When there was an outbreak in the US, no one died they killed all of the cows before they could get infected. There was even a case on Feb. 25 2014 in California and still nobody has died yet.
The CDC is still not sure what causes the cows to have such a deadly disease but they at least know that it came from what the cows ate. After the cows are infected the people still might not know that the cows are infected so they just kill the cows eat the beef. Later the person who ate the beef with the disease ends up getting the disease and because there is still no cure for mad cow disease it can be very fatal.
The prion protein infection of the mad cow disease passes on from organism to organism. So when the host dies the prion protein still lives but just goes through the portal exit of the cow. Then looks for a host, usually its some kind of cattle that comes by to eat the grass it ends up eating the prion protein making the cattle infected. Later they go to get killed for the beef and end up getting eaten. Then the person who ate the beef gets infected and dies, then the cycle starts all over again.
Mad Cow Disease can also be indirect transmission because sometimes insects can carry the disease and then bite the humans (most of the time its flys) this is the same way how the black death first started. It doesn't have to be from insects but it is easier to get the disease by insects. These insects land on the brain of the cow after the cow has been dissected and carries the disease and then lands on a human if the human gets the disease through any of his entry points then the person will get infected and has a high chance of not surviving.
The Disease first started in The UK in 1986 with 144 deaths, then it went around Europe, for example country's like Italy and France. Later in 2003 it arrived in the US, and luckily no one died. After that in 2014 there was a spread of mad cow disease in California. It was just like when it spread in the US nobody died but right now they are trying their best so that nobody does get the disease.
When the disease first came out nobody knew what it was and didn't know what to do, that is why there were 144 deaths but when it spread in the US people knew what to do because the UK had the same problem and they ended up having to kill and burn every single cow, causing the market on beef for the US to go down 80%, because no country wanted to get their beef from the US. They didn't want their country to get infected by the mad cow disease. That gave the US a run for their money.
When The UK first got the mad cow disease it was strange for the farmers because they had no idea what was going on so they just kept eating their cows beef and there were 400,000 cow that were infected which meant that almost every farmer had a cow that was infected, because of all of those cows there were 144 deaths (most of them were farmers). The people who got infected ether ate contaminated beef or inhaled contaminated fertiliser. By the time it was 2004 at least 157 people were infected and killed by this disease.
It was known that mad cow disease started in 2003 in the US but in 2005 there was already 5 cases of people who had mad cow disease. The US tested 20,526 cows and killed 35 million just to keep the disease from spreading in North America. Japan and Korea refused to get their beef from america until they were sure that the USDA had properly tested the beef, China still refuses to get their beef from america even till this day.
